[Whirl] hello, and questions about riding recumbents in this area

Not sure if email gets to the list or if I need go back to the website-so here goes.

Given your proximity in Falls Church to Vienna, I’d try there first. Mt. Airy has a larger selection though.
From Falls Church, the W & OD trail and then Custiss trails would get you to Rosilyn /Georgetown. Could get a Capital Bikeshare membership then commute from the trails in from the Rosylin/Georgetown/National Malls the rest of the way to Shaw.
I wouldn’t be comfortable with a trike on downtown & Shaw DC streets. Vienna is a recumbent & folder specialty shop. John added the folder specialization after his wife got stranded downtown on the 9/11 attacks, so he might be familiar with some more cycling commuting routes that might be safe from your home to work and might also be able to suggest a trike park and lock partway and folder the rest of the way option.
I’d also be concerned in Shaw about trike & part thefts. I see bikes stripped aggressively in DC.
Can’t take trikes on Metro, so if you have a breakdown it could be a problem too.
In 2004 I had to push/pull/carry a trike 4 miles home from Alexandria to Arlington and it was no fun.

Forgot to answer your second question.

Bikes at Vienna (Virginia) and Mt. Airy Bikes (Maryland) are the two recumbent dealers in the area. I've purchased from and had work done at both. I bought RANS V-REX and Rocket at Mt. Airy, the TerraTrike at Bikes at Vienna.

You can't go wrong at either one.

Hi everyone. Does anyone on this list ride a recumbent trike in DC? I'm wondering if you feel safe doing so. I just moved from NYC where it was decidedly NOT a good idea, but now that i'm close to so many great bike trails and paths, I'd love to finally buy one for my commute between Falls Church and the Shaw area.

I'd also love to know if there's any shops in the area that specialize in recumbent trikes. I've demo'd the HP Gekko and Scorpion FS and a TerraTrike, and definitely liked the HP better, but would love to try the new Azub Ti-Fly before I make a final decision.

Many thanks for any insight you can provide,
Suzanne
