Message-ID: <000001d60f65$f95fb180$ec1f1480$@Matarella.com> Hello all, I'm not clear if this list is still active but thought I'd give it a try. Since it's Kathy's list there will be at least one person I know still on it! I've moved down to Florida 8 years ago. I reached out to this list among other 'net bent resources through nostalgia and the fact I'm digging the bikes out again. A fairly amazing story, I reached out to Larry Black asking him to keep his eyes open for a Rotator Pursuit. I'd sold mine 20+ years back and regret it. He not only came across a Pursuit, but it was mine that I sold back in the day! He's refreshed it and it will be one of a couple! Bikes he'll be shipping me over the next few days. J Why stick your toe in the water when you can dive in! Anyway not sure how if anyone will even see this or if the list is alive. I joined a couple weeks ago and having seen any messages so thought I'd try. I do miss the old days of W.H.I.R.L for sure! In-Reply-To: References: Message-ID: <000701d60f7c$63994a00$2acbde00$@Matarella.com> Hi all, I rode with WHIRL in the pretty early days. Vic Sussman, Alan Pollock, Mark Colliton. I rode with Jim Kellet and his daughter, Kathy Bilton of course. Bill Cook? More names will pop into my head right after I hit send I?m sure. The WHIRL route was a great ride. Occasionally Vic and Mark would lead a detour off the usual route up ?cardiac hill? J I organized the WHIRL Big Ride back in 1998-2000, with permission and blessing of Vic and Alan which I sought because the whole principle of WHIRL was no organization. They happily made an exception for my effort and that event. And of course I created and ran Recumbents.com for several years, eventually passing that to Warren Beauchamp and WISIL. I still have my first bent a Linear LWB but it took some damage when it fell off a bike storage pole years ago. I will decide whether to order replacement parts or part out once I assess the ?new to me? bikes coming soon. I still have the Rans Stratus I bought from Mark Colliton, which he converted to a 24 inch wheel and fork to great effect. I still have a Lightning version M5 CroMo Low racer with mono blade suspended fork, but we discovered years ago the fork was cracked. Lighting showed no interest in assisting. But I discovered John Schlitter ex of Rans is now dba Schlitter bikes just south of me in St Pete and deals in M5. So once social distancing is no longer necessary I?ll reach out to him to see if we can get a fork and get that on the road too. I mentioned Larry Black aka Mt Airy Bicycles found and refurbed MY old Rotator Pursuit. That will be on the way to me shortly. Thanks Larry! Also a Kingcycle I test rode at Mt Airy 20+ years ago and really liked turned out to still be in the Mt Airy warehouse, that shipped to me today. Thanks Larry! And last but not least, a Ryan Vanguard from Mt Airy is about to be shipped as well. I?ve ridden them in the past and loved it. Once I?ve got the Ryan as a fantastic example of LWB USS I will decide if I want to fix the Linear too or part that out. So right now I?m cleaning and reorganizing the garage! I got a Tour Easy fame and tricked it out with the latest and greatest components. I spent over $4000 on it over the years and put over 10,000 miles on it, as I used to ride to work regularly as well and did a couple of centuries on it also. I migrated to riding it on a trainer and later passed it on to my son. I still remember many of the group and especially Kathy. I left my bent bikes in the US for the moment. A bacchetta ti aero, and a barcroft Columbia tandem. Last year the tandem's steel chain stay snapped close to the frame. I had some local dude, Bruce the welder, weld it back together, but sadly the other stays were bent out of shape so now it's all screwed up. I'm trying to get it fixed and considering just replacing all the chain and seat stays at this point. They seem a little under-engineered for a touring couple. Does anyone have recommendations for someone who can work on a steel recumbent frame with this kind of problem? Obviously, I'm not in any hurry... Thanks and hope I can ride with y'all soon, and feel free to drop a line if anyone comes to Germany. Best, Cannon On Sun, Apr 12, 2020, 7:09 AM Mark Matarella wrote: > Howdy. As to turning radius my experience was that it was quite large, partly in view of the long wheelbase, but also because of the low center of gravity and the long tiller effect, both of which made low speed handling more difficult than on most bents. Despite the low-speed handling problems the Pursuit is still my favorite bent of all the ones I have owned. The combination of comfort and speed(with a fairing), without having to resort to a very laid-back seating position, is superior to that of any other bent I have ridden. I have no doubt that the Pursuit, with the factory fairing and tailbox, is faster on the level and downhill, but not climbing, than a Gold Rush Replica with the zipped-up closed cloth fairing. I?m sure I would get a lot of flack on this, but the lower frontal area of the Pursuit is too much for the Gold Rush to compete with. It?s sad that so many of the companies that promoted the emergence of recumbents in the 1990s and 2000s are no longer with us. I also find it sad that so much of the recumbent market is dominated by trikes. I?m a huge fan of trikes, having owned two, but the greater speed, reduced weight, easier transportability and stowage, as well as lesser cost, should make two-wheel bents at least as popular as trikes. Enjoy riding your cycles as a way of dealing with this pandemic, and thank you Kathy for keeping this forum going. My guess for the Pursuit was 99 so I?ve updated to say I had by 98. LOL. My Stratus is wide turning radius too but for me that tight turn issue is almost never an issue on a real world ride. I felt like the Pursuit with a Zzipper fairing was quite fast indeed. One day when I had ridden down to Mt Vernon with the Rans Stratus AND the BOB trailer on the back a couple roadies asked me how I could possibly ride that part of the trail and it?s twisties on that combo. I suggested if they were ready to leave they follow me and find out. It was winter, the trees were bare (so you could see ahead past bends) and the trail empty. I?m happy to see I lost them. And yes Kathy thanks for keeping this in place, nice trip down memory lane.
